Normally the cows and calves are provided de-worming on a monthly basis to keep them healthy. Overall, the goshala provides an hygenic, healthy and lovable environment for its residents – The native cows!

"Imporatantly cows were not sent to saughter house or for meat. Dead cows in the Goshalas will be disposed of in a manner that prevents spread of diseases to other livestock, preserves the environment, and safeguards public health. "

FEED AND FODDER

Paddy being the main crop cultivated in our district, the straws are fed to the animals throughout the year and constitute the major roughage for the cattle. Being poor in nutritive value, the feeding of these crop residues cannot meet nutrient requirements of animals. These crop residues are essentially inferior Feeds, having cower palatability, lower digestibility, low nitrogen, context and high fiber. The major fodder crops grown in northern India for dairy animals consists of luceme, berseem, maize, oat, sorghum, etc, However, the green fodder resources for livestock here are mainly derived from grazing in grass lands and pastures, weeds, bund grasses tree leaves and mixed forages.

It is proposed to take up cultivation of high yielding fodder grass varieties like Napier, hybrid Co3, Co4, along with velimasal protein rich leguminous fodder and Agathi as tree at the rate of 20 cents per farmer with the project cost of Rs. Rs.1 lakh for 50 farmers.

AZOLA CULTIVATION

Azola as a feed supplement has proved to improve the quality & quantity of milk. Trials on dairy animals showed an overall increase of milk yield by 15-20% when 2-3kg of Azola combined with regular feed is given. 15-20% of commercial feed can be replaced with the same quantity of Azola on dry weight basis, without affecting milk production. It is also observed that Azola feeding improves the health and longevity of live stock.

To propagate the Azola cultivation, it is planned to start one azola pit for every milk producer with a project cost of Rs. 3000 per pit. The training for azolla cultivation may be taken up with the support of Agriculture department and if need be the same may be supported by NABARD under FTTF.

VERMI COMPOST UNITS

Vermi compost prepared from the excreta of earth worms is rich in humus and nutrients. By rearing earth worms, we can produce the required quantities of Vermi Compost. To propagate the Vermi Compost preparation it is planned to start one vermin Compost unit per house hold for the milk producer of the joint liability group, with the project cost of Rs.7,000 per unit.

MILK COLLECTION CENTER

Milk marketing will be initially tied up with AAVIN. The Milk Collection centers proposed to be set up will procure milk from respective villages and serve as aggregation centers before it is dispatched to BMCUs. The milk collection centers generate revenue by way of commission given by AAVIN on per liter basis. The 80% of revenue is fully spent for maintaining the cows and 20 % for old people and children and pregnent women..
